Eakins promoted from AHL Gulls Coach to the NHL Anaheim Ducks Head Coach

After months of fans waiting and speculating who GM Bob Murray would go with as the head coach. There was the obvious and most likely candidate in the eyes of the fans. The obvious and well sensible person for the job from a Ducks fans’ point of view was the Ducks affiliate AHL San Diego Gulls head coach Dallas Eakins. Well Ducks fans wanted Eakins and that is what the Ducks fans got when the Anaheim Ducks officially announced that the Anaheim Ducks have indeed hired Dallas Eakins, which is pronounced: a-kins, as the Head Coach of the Anaheim Ducks.  Photo by Anaheim Ducks

A franchise record made, Eakins is the 10th Head Coach in the Ducks franchise history.

Eakins has been the head coach of the San Diego Gulls for four years and 3 out of 4 he lead the Gulls to the Calder Cup Playoffs and in 2018-19 made it all the way to the Finals which is the farthest that the Gulls have gone in the playoffs.

In 1985 Eakins was drafted by Washington and in his career the defenseman collected 208 penalty minutes, won the Calder Cup in 2002 and the Turner Cup in 2000.

Now does Eakins have any other experience as a head coach besides being the head coach of the Gulls for four years? The answer is yes.

Eakins was the head coach of the AHL Toronto Marlies from 2009-2013. Then he got a taste of the NHL when he was the coach of the Edmonton Oilers from 2013-2015. Then he became the head coach of the Ducks affiliate AHL San Diego Gulls from 2015-2019. Now he gets a second shot at the major league as the 10th NHL head coach of the Anaheim Ducks.

It will take hard work and the Ducks will have to put in the work to make next season the turn around season that the organization and fans are looking forward to.

Last season was an injury ridden season and 26 different players from the Gull were utilized throughout the season so the Ducks most likely saw the difference as some players got called up a few times and the Ducks players got to see the outcome of the good work they were doing with the Gulls. This leads to think that it will be or should be an easy transition for the team since  many of the players have been coached by or spent time with Eakins.
